Acamas, son of Theseus and Phaedra, arrived in Thrace during a long journey to Troy, and as soon as he met the gaze of the beautiful Phyllis, a tender and overwhelming love was born. But the young man did not stay long, as his destiny was to fight in the war, leaving young Phyllis to wait for him for more than ten years.
The weeks turned into months, and finally, years. Phyllis desperately awaited Acamas's return, but in vain. Upon hearing of the fall of Troy, Phyllis, seeing no ships on the horizon, assumed her lover was dead and let herself die of grief.
The goddess of the gods, Athena, moved by Phyllis's sad story, decided to transform her into an almond tree.
When Acamas, who was actually still alive, learned of this transformation, he went to the tree and embraced it with love and sorrow. Phyllis felt that embrace and caused small white flowers to sprout from the branches.
The embrace of the two lovers recurs every early spring, testifying to their eternal love.
